British soldier killed in S Afghanistan

A British soldier has lost his life in the volatile Helmand province in southern Afghanistan, bringing the total UK death toll in the war-torn country to 351 since the beginning of the war.

The British Ministry of Defense announced Friday that the soldier from 1st Battalion of the Royal Irish Regiment, died in an operational accident in the Nad-e Ali district of the Helmand province, a Press TV correspondent reported.

"He died as a result of an operational accident, which is currently under investigation," Task Force Helmand spokesman Lieutenant Colonel David Eastman stated.

The latest casualty puts the overall number of British soldiers killed in Afghanistan so far this year to three.

The death also brings the total number of death toll among US troops in Afghanistan since the onset of the war in 2001 to 351, 309 of whom were killed as a result of military engagement and the rising violence against foreign troops in the war-ravaged country.

2010 was the bloodiest year of the nine-year conflict in Afghanistan, with casualties steadily soaring among both civilians and foreign troops, mainly due to a rise in Taliban attacks.

As many as 711 foreign troops lost their lives in Afghanistan -- an average of two a day -- which is by far greater than the annual toll of 521 during 2009.

Despite the presence of some 150,000 NATO forces in the Asian country, the violence and daily militant attacks have not been subdued in Afghanistan.

Britain has about 9,500 troops in Afghanistan, making it the second-largest contributor after the United States to the NATO-led International Security Assistance Force.

ISAF has some 140,000 troops in Afghanistan, two-thirds of which are from the United States, fighting a nine-year war with the Taliban.

Egypt minister regrets 'harsh treatment'

Dozens of journalists from around the world have been detained or assaulted while covering the revolution protests in Egypt as massive anti-government protests continues in the North African country.

Egypt's Finance Minister Samir Radwan has apologized for the "harsh treatment" of government forces toward journalists and Egyptian protesters during massive anti-government demonstrations in the country.

"I would apologize to any journalist or any foreigner or any Egyptian for that matter that has been subjected to this harsh treatment," Radwan said in an interview with CNN on Friday.

"I inquired and I was told that there is zero tolerance, zero tolerance of this government on attacks against foreigners, let alone journalists whom we need to have them on our side, to watch this situation unfold and convey a much better image to the outside world," the Egyptian minister added.

He made the remarks a day after the New York-based Committee to Protect Journalists stated that it had recorded 24 detentions of journalists, 21 assaults and five cases of confiscation of equipment for over a 24-hour period amid ongoing revolutionary protests in the North African country.

The committee said an Egyptian journalist, who was working for the al-Ta'awun newspaper, died on Friday of a gunshot wound he suffered while covering the unrest in the Egyptian capital, Cairo, a week ago.

UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon has denounced the attacks on journalists and human rights activists as "outrageous and totally unacceptable," calling for an immediate cessation of violence against journalists as well as protesters, who have relentlessly urged the ouster of embattled Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak.

A Press TV correspondent in Cairo was also forced to flee a scene of chaos and violence as he feared being arrested by government forces on Thursday.

On Wednesday, Reporters Without Borders Secretary General Jean-Francois Julliard hit out at pro-Mubarak mob and government vigilantes over "shocking" attacks in Cairo against foreign reporters.

Meanwhile, reports indicate that at least eight people were killed and more than 800 injured during clashes on Wednesday and Thursday in several Egyptian cities, including Cairo and Alexandria.

According to the United Nations, at least 300 people have so far been killed and thousands more injured during nationwide revolution protests in Egypt.

Two US-led soldiers killed in Afghan war

At least two US-led soldiers have been killed in the latest spate of attacks against foreign troops in southern Afghanistan, the International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) says.

According to a statement released by the NATO-led alliance on Saturday, the soldiers lost their lives in separate bombings in volatile southern Afghanistan, bringing the death toll among foreign troops in the war-ravaged country since the beginning of this year to 36.

Five US-led soldiers with the international coalition have been killed so far in February.

The identities of the soldiers and the exact locations of Saturday's blasts were not immediately disclosed.

Last year saw a considerable spike in the number of attacks on US-led soldiers in Afghanistan with more than 710 troops killed.

US President Barack Obama has said US forces would begin pulling out of Afghanistan in July 2011.

On Jan 6, US Defense Secretary Robert Gates ordered an extra 1,400 Marines to southern Afghanistan in an attempt to fend off an anticipated spring offensive by Taliban militants returning from neighboring Pakistan.

The surge comes despite an earlier promise by Obama to withdraw American forces from Afghanistan by July 2011.

The upsurge in the number of casualties among US-led foreign forces in tandem with the heavy civilian casualties have provoked a barrage criticism from countries which have contributed troops to the prolonged Afghan mission.

World rallies to support Egypt revolution

Hundreds of thousands of people around the world have held rallies to support the revolutionary drive of Egyptians and call for the ouster of President Hosni Mubarak.

In the Tunisian capital Tunis, protesters rallied near the Egyptian Embassy. They told President Mubarak to leave just like ousted Tunisian president Zine El Abidine Ben Ali.

In the Turkish city of Istanbul, protesters called for an immediate regime change in Egypt.

In Lebanese capital, Beirut, people gathered outside the Egyptian Embassy, calling for political reform in Egypt.

Thousands of Malaysian protesters, who took to the streets to show support for the Egyptian revolution, clashed with police while staging a march to the US Embassy in Kuala Lumpur, a Press TV correspondent reported.

They demanded that US President Barack Obama force his Egyptian counterpart to step down.

In the Iranian capital, Tehran, demonstrators took to the streets following the Friday Prayers, chanting slogans against Israel, the US, and Mubarak.

They torched pictures of Mubarak and Obama, setting fire to the American and Israeli flags.

Similar rallies have been staged in other countries such as the Czech Republic, Belgium, Jordan, and Thailand in a show of solidarity with protesters in Egypt.

Roadside blast kills one in Pakistan

A roadside bomb has gone off in the upper Kurram Agency in northwestern Pakistan, killing at least one person despite government's efforts to flush out militants in the area.

The incident occurred in the upper Kurram Agency on Saturday, while in the southwestern province of Baluchistan militants blew up two electricity towers and a gas pipeline, local officials told a Press TV correspondent.

According to the officials, one of the blasts took place near the city of Quetta, suspending electricity to parts of the province. The second incident occured in Dera Bugti district.

No group has claimed responsibility for the attacks yet.

Violence undermines security in the militancy-hit country despite Pakistani government's claims that the country's military has achieved major gains against Taliban militants in a series of offensives in the tribal areas.

Nearly 4,000 people have so far been killed in militant attacks throughout Pakistan since July 2007, reports say.

Q: Growing tired of the Facebook privacy scandals, I tried to leave the social network, but you need to be a member now to access a number of outside websites. How can I get around this?

A: Facebook, as you're well aware by this point, has a history of privacy scandals. CEO Mark Zuckerberg is constantly trying to push what privacy means in the 21st century — how transparent should we all be on the Internet? — but with each step, a significant number of users push back. Last week, Facebook announced on its Developers blog that it was making it possible for third-party applications to gain access to users' mobile phone numbers and addresses. By early Monday morning the Facebook team had dialed back the change until further notice.
Some of the privacy issues have been just too much for users, resulting in cancelled accounts. But more and more organizations are joining the Facebook Connect network and incorporating the site's development tools into their own. It's getting to the point where you're at a disadvantage if you don't have a Facebook account; you can use it to log in with the same username and password on more than two million sites — it's not just for checking in on your cousin's newest baby pictures. So, here's the trick: You can go nearly invisible on Facebook — nobody will be able to view your photographs, see your activity or where you've checked in except for existing friends — but still have an account to use around the web.
If you're ready to move into Facebook stealth mode, follow these simple steps:
• Visit Facebook.com, log in to your profile and click 'Account' in the top-right corner. From there, choose 'Privacy Settings.'
• From the 'Privacy Settings' page, click on 'View Settings' to see who can search for you, send messages to your account, see your education and work settings and more. Change all of these drop-down menus to 'Friends Only.'
• Return to the 'Privacy Settings' page and choose 'Customize Settings' near the bottom of the page. This new page will load a number of different privacy options, but you'll want to click through each one and change the setting to 'Only Me' so that nobody else can see your Facebook activity.
• Stay on the 'Customize Settings' page and scroll down to 'Things Others Share.' Here, you'll want to edit and disable settings so that your friends are unable to write on your wall, comment on posts and check you in to places.
• Return to the 'Privacy Settings' page and, under 'Apps and Websites' in the bottom-left corner, select 'Edit Your Settings.' This page shows all of the third-party websites and applications that you have given access to some of your Facebook information. If you see anything on this list that you want to remove, just click to remove it from the list.
• Stay on the 'Apps and Websites' page, scroll down to 'Instant Personalization' and select 'Edit Settings.' Uncheck the box at the bottom of this page to block other websites from accessing your Facebook interests. Select 'Confirm' when a pop-up asks you if you're sure you want to disable this option.
• Return to the 'Apps and Websites' page, scroll down to 'Public Search' and select 'Edit Settings.' To keep search engines from finding your Facebook profile, uncheck the box on this new screen.

Just days after Starz announced they were planning to recast the title role, left vacated by Andy Whitfield, who has been battling cancer, a rep for the cable channel confirmed to Access Hollywood that Australian actor Liam McIntyre has won the part.

Liam, 28, will take over the role, which Andy left due to his cancer battle, as the network proceeds with Season 2 of the bloody drama, which begins shooting this spring.
"Since no one can really replace Andy, we realized that we should instead find an actor who can truly lead 'Spartacus' forward," Starz President and CEO Chris Albrecht said in a statement. "It was important to us to have Andy endorse the idea of recasting this part, which he did in the same heroic manner that he's dealt with his whole ordeal. And that, coupled with our fortune in finding a young actor with the gladiator credentials and the acting ability of Liam, makes it easier for us to keep this hit franchise going."

Liam's pedigree includes stints on the long-running Australian soap "Neighbors" (the same show "House M.D.'s" Jesse Spencer comes from). He also had a small role in HBO's "The Pacific," playing the character of Lew.
According to Starz, Liam is currently in New Zealand where he is getting "into gladiator shape" in order to take on the meaty part.
As previously reported on AccessHollywood.com, Andy was unable to film Season 2 due to his battle with Non-Hodgkin lymphoma, a condition the actor first revealed he had early last year.

A network executive told reporters at the Television Critics Association Winter 2011 Session earlier this month that Starz has "remained in close contact with Andy," who they said was "supportive" of the network's efforts "to recast this role."
In the run up to Season 2 of "Spartacus," the network will air "Spartacus: Gods of the Arena," starring Lucy Lawless and John Hannah, beginning Friday, January 21 at 10 PM.

Facebook to shut down 15th of march?

PALO ALTO, CA –Mark Zuckerberg announced that Facebook will be shut down in March. Managing the site has become too stressful.
“Facebook has gotten out of control,” said Zuckerberg in a press conference outside his Palo Alto office, “and the stress of managing this company has ruined my life. I need to put an end to all the madness.”
Zuckerberg went on to explain that starting March 15th, users will no longer be able to access their Facebook accounts.
“After March 15th the whole website shuts down,” said Avrat Humarthi, Vice President of Technical Affairs at Facebook. “So if you ever want to see your pictures again, I recommend you take them off the internet. You won’t be able to get them back once Facebook goes out of business.”
Zuckerberg said that the decision to shut down Facebook was difficult, but that he does not think people will be upset.
“I personally don’t think it’s a big deal,” he said in a private phone interview. “And to be honest, I think it’s for the better. Without Facebook, people will have to go outside and make real friends. That’s always a good thing.”
Some Facebook users were furious upon hearing the shocking news.
“What am I going to do without Facebook?” said Denise Bradshaw, a high school student from Indiana. “My life revolves around it. I’m on Facebook at least 10 hours a day. Now what am I going to do with all that free time?”
However, parents across the country have been experiencing a long anticipated sense of relief.
“I’m glad the Facebook nightmare is over,” said Jon Guttari, a single parent from Detroit. “Now my teenager’s face won’t be glued to a computer screen all day. Maybe I can even have a conversation with her.”
Those in the financial circuit are criticizing Zuckerberg for walking away from a multibillion dollar franchise. Facebook is currently ranked as one of the wealthiest businesses in the world, with economists estimating its value at around 7.9 billion.
But Zuckerberg remains unruffled by these accusations. He says he will stand by his decision to give Facebook the axe.
“I don’t care about the money,” said Zuckerberg. “I just want my old life back.”
The Facebook Corporation suggests that users remove all of their personal information from the website before March 15th. After that date, all photos, notes, links, and videos will be permanently erased.

Best and worst bottled water brands

How much do you know about the bottled water you drink? Not nearly enough, according to a new report released today from Environmental Working Group (EWG). "Bottled water companies try hard to hide information you might find troubling," says Jane Houlihan, senior vice president of research for the Washington D.C.-based research and advocacy group.
EWG analyzed the labels of 173 unique bottled water products and company websites to determine if companies disclose information on where water comes from, how or if their water is treated, and whether the results of purity testing are revealed. The nonprofit also looked at how effective (and advanced) any water treatment methods are. Researchers followed up by calling dozens of bottled water companies to find out which ones willingly tell consumers what's in their bottles.
The Environmental Protection Agency says on its website that consumers have the right to know where their water comes from and what's in it so they can "make informed choices that affect the health of themselves and their families." Tap water is regularly tested and consumers can find their local water info online. That's not necessarily the case with bottled water, which is not required to disclose that information to consumers. "Bottled water is a food product and every one of these companies is complying with federal law," says Tom Lauria, of the International Bottled Water Association.
More than half of the bottled water products surveyed failed EWG's transparency test --18 percent didn't say where their water comes from, and another 32 percent did not disclose any information on treatment or purity of water.
Only three brands earned the highest possible marks for disclosing information and using the most advanced treatment methods available - Gerber Pure Purified Water, Nestle Pure Life Purified Water, and Penta Ultra-Purified Water.
On the other end of the spectrum, these six brands got the worst marks in EWG's report because they don't provide consumers with the three basic facts about water on product labels or their company website - Whole Foods Italian Still Mineral Water, Vintage Natural Spring Water, Sahara Premium Drinking Water, O Water Sport Electrolyte Enhanced Purified Drinking Water, Market Basket Natural Spring Water, and Cumby's Spring Water.
How does your bottled water brand stack up? Here's a look at the 10 top-selling* U.S. brands:
1.     Pure Life Purified Water (Nestle), EWG grade = B
2.     Arrowhead Mountain Spring Water (Nestle), EWG grade = C

Filtered tap water received the best grade (an A) from EWG because if you change your filter regularly, EWG says it is purer than bottled water, plus it saves money (bottled water can cost up to 1,900 times more than what flows from your tap). Drinking tap water also takes less of a toll on the planet. EWG offers plenty of tips for filtering your tap water so that you can drink the healthiest water possible.

What should you do when bottled water is your only option? "While our top choice is filtered tap water, when you do need to choose bottled water, we recommend brands that tell you what's in the water and that use advanced treatment technologies like reverse osmosis and micro-filtration," says Houlihan. Advanced treatment technologies remove pollutants that other methods don't. You should look for bottled water products that tell you where the water is coming from and how pure it is.
Here are the results for all 173 bottled water brands included in the report. You'll find that some less popular brands rank even lower than our list of top-sellers.
The advice to drink filtered tap water can seem confusing when there are often reports about the contaminants found in municipal water supplies. Just last month, for example, EWG announced that cancer causing hexavalent chromium (chromium-6) is in 31 cities' tap water. Houlihan says chromium-6 is as likely to be in your bottled water as it is in your tap water and we need action from the federal government on this. She points out that a reverse osmosis filter can remove the worrisome contaminant. You can guarantee its removal in your home supply, but in many cases you don't know what's in the bottle you're drinking from.
